A scammer told an elderly Lincoln woman her grandson needed bailed out of jail- she sent $42K

Lincoln Police said an 87-year-old Lincoln woman is out $41, 856 after she got a call from someone claiming to be her grandson who lived in Texas. He told her he had been arrested for a hit and run and he needed to be bailed out of jail.

She was instructed to wire around $12,000 to an account in Florida, send $9,000 in cash to New Jersey and then buy $6,000 in Home Depot gift cards and provide the numbers for them over the phone.

The victim later reported it to Lincoln Police. Officer Angela Sands said law enforcement in Florida have been notified, and they’re working to obtain any information about the account the money was sent to.
