Lincoln bomb squad in communication with FBI about national bomb scares, always ready for action

Lincoln’s bomb squad has to be ready every day.

“It can happen anywhere, anytime,” Damon Robbins, bomb technician said.

Robbins said in the wake of pipe bombs being sent to some of the nation’s most high-profile politicians, their squad was on alert.

“I’m not trying to scare anybody but if it looks out of the ordinary for you, and you’re the most familiar with your surroundings and you know what is normal for you, by all means don’t touch it, don’t move it.”

He said there haven’t been any legitimate threats of this kind of activity in Lincoln, but it’s always good to be prepared.

There was one similar call in Lincoln Thursday night that ended up being a prank.

“A Lincoln woman called police to report she received a suspicious package,” Officer Angela Sands said.

Sands said the package was addressed to the woman’s nickname, had a return address of the White House and a Fort Worth, Texas zip code on the postage stamp.

It wasn’t a bomb inside, Sands said, but a letter from the woman’s friend who later said it was meant to be a joke.

“She was on high alert because of everything that’s been on national headlines, and thought this package was something similar,” Sands said.

There were no criminal charges, but Sands and Robbins said these pranks take a lot of resources away from actual cases.

“We take every call seriously like it’s the real thing until we know otherwise,” Robbins said. “Until we know otherwise we try to get as much information as we can, we aren’t going to leave until we know.”

In the case of the national bomb scares, the Lincoln bomb squad was alerted by the federal government to be on the lookout for this activity here.

Again there’s no indication that any of those packages will make their way to the Capitol City.

He did say you should be aware of your surroundings, and call 911 if you notice anything out of the ordinary and recommends coming up with a bomb plan for your home or business.
