‘Yogi Bear wanna-be’ arrested in coconut cream pie theft in Grand Island

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man was caught Tuesday after stealing a fresh pie from a Grand Island cafe, police say.

Michael Warkentin, 27, broke into the Shady Bend Cafe on Friday night and stole a coconut cream pie and $179 in cash, according to police.

In a Facebook post Monday, the Grand Island Police Department asked for help identifying the “Yogi Bear wanna-be.”

The next day around 2:30 p.m., an officer found Warkentin, who had brass knuckles and a serrated steak knife in his coat, police said.

Warkentin is a convicted felon and banned from having any weapons.  He also had a stolen wallet on him, according to police.

He was arrested on suspicion of several charges, including burglary and possession of stolen property.
