Lincoln church sustains over $1 million in damages from early morning fire

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A southeast Lincoln church caught fire early Saturday morning, causing more than $1 million in damages.

Lincoln Fire & Rescue responded to a call for smoke showing from New Covenant Community Church just before 3 a.m.

Upon arrival, LFR reported there was smoldering flames in the roof.

Crews had to peel back several layers in the roof to be able to battle the fire, according to LFR.

Initial estimates determine the fire caused more than $1 million in damages, with most of the damage in between the roof and the ceiling.

Representatives from the church say everything in the sanctuary is a complete loss.

A lightning strike from the storm is the suspected cause of the fire, but is not yet determined, LFR said.

LFR said they have terminated fire watch at the church and will allow for investigators to enter the building.

The incident is still under investigation.

The congregation will gather in the parking lot tomorrow morning at normal mass times for prayer and support.
