Gas leak found outside southeast Lincoln elementary school

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincoln Fire & Rescue is responding Wednesday to a gas leak outside Maxey Elementary School.

In a letter to families, Lincoln Public Schools said the building was evacuated after someone reported an odor outside the school.

LFR and Black Hills Energy went to the school and found a gas leak outside the building.

LPS said students and staff are safe to re-enter the south side of the building, while officials continue to address the leak.

The school is also working to feed all students lunch.  At this time, students are not being dismissed early, but afternoon preschool classes have been canceled.

“Again, our staff are focused on supervising students and providing a safe environment,” the district said.  “Please help us focus our efforts by not coming to school or calling the office unless it is an emergency.”

LPS released a statement at 1:15 p.m. informing families they were returning to a normal schedule.

It was determined the issue was at the gas meter outside the building.

LPS and Black Hills Energy addressed the issue and all air quality readings indicate the building is safe for staff and students.
