Bryan Heart cardiologists study health of young athletes after COVID
More than 200 athletes who tested positive for COVID have been studied by local cardiologists.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Husker Cardiologist Dr. Mathue Baker spoke at the Bryan Health briefing as Bryan Heart and Bryan Medical Center have been working with local colleges, athletes to provide sports consultations for cardiac clearance so athletes can return-to-play.
“ We’re doing this in absolutely every athlete that was diagnosed with COVID, is an echocardiogram, which is basically a fancy ultrasound of the heart,” said Baker.
Cardiologists also have some athletes do MRIs, and office evaluations while they look for Troponin T, cardiac enzymes, which could cause heart damage. Baker says cardiologists are collecting this data to help study COVID-19, and the potential impact it has on athletes.
Sports Consultations have been provided for student-athletes from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, Nebraska Wesleyan University, Doane University, Peru State College, Hastings College, Concordia University-Nebraska, and others.
