Gas leak closes part of major Lincoln road

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A stretch of 27th Street was closed for the Tuesday afternoon commute after a gas leak.

A postal worker reported the leak about 2:30 p.m. near 27th and M streets after smelling natural gas, according to Lincoln Fire & Rescue.

LFR determined that the smell was coming from inside a home.

Firefighters repeatedly knocked on the door, but no one answered, so they forced their way in.

They found one person inside who didn’t hear them knocking because she was watching TV, according to LFR.

Firefighters detected elevated levels of natural gas in the home and evacuated the resident.

Power was shut off to the home, and Black Hills Energy is investigating.

LFR shut down 27th Street from M to N streets about 4:30 p.m., but it was reopen by 6:30 p.m.
