Six wounded in shooting in Crete

CRETE, Neb. (KLKN) — Six people were shot in Crete on Friday afternoon, authorities say.

It happened just after 4:30 p.m. in the northeast part of the city, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.

First responders found six people with gunshot wounds at a home near Crestline Drive and Parklane Street. The patrol said three of the victims were children.

The victims were taken to the Crete Area Medical Center. Some have since been transported to other hospitals, authorities said.

The state patrol said their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

“More than anything, we are thankful that all of the victims of the shooting will survive,” said Capt. Sean Caradori with the state patrol.

While they were on scene, officers heard a gunshot coming from a home across the street.

The SWAT team arrived with multiple armored vehicles.

About 6:45 p.m., the SWAT team entered the home and found the suspect dead. He had a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.

Nearby Doane University was in lockdown for about an hour.

“We have received reports of an off-campus Crete incident and have secured all campus buildings out of caution,” the university said on social media. “If you are on campus, we recommend that you remain inside until we have the all-clear.”

Police have not yet identified the victims or the suspect.

But someone who approached reporters at the scene, Joshua Morales, said one of the victims was his friend.

Morales said his friend’s family was targeted by one of their neighbors.

He claimed that the attack was racially motivated, saying the neighbor had told his friend’s parents to go back to their country.

“The dude just shot up the house, so I guess it was just a racist thing,” Morales said.

But authorities have not identified the suspect or said what the motive was.

The patrol is expected to release more information on Saturday.
