LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — City Impact plans to serve 600 families in their Gifts of Love program, but the organization is calling for volunteers as they don’t have as many due to COVID.

“It really is dependent on a great volunteer base to happen, so we still need about 100 shopper assistant volunteers between December 9th and December 13th,” said Lisa Guill, City Impact communications director.

Guill says the organization adopted a safer version of the program because of COVID. Parents can stay in their cars and communicate through zoom with volunteers, who will shop and show items for parents inside the warehouse.

She also says they expect in-kind donations to be less than the previous year and each donation is vital for local families as Christmas fast approaches.

“Because we are in a pandemic, we actually have fewer collection boxes out than usual,” said Guill. “We anticipate that we will receive fewer in-kind donations from these sites because people are not shopping in the community the way they normally are. So we expect that they’ll be down at least 40 percent.”
