Turning the corner after eventful night of severe storms, damaging winds
Severe winds tore through much of southeast Nebraska, leaving a trail of damage from around Lincoln through Omaha – areas that likely didn’t want or need more severe weather to deal with this year. Maximum wind gusts reported included a 92-mph wind gust in Denton, more 90-mph winds at Eppley Airport, and an 83-mph wind gust at the Lincoln Airport.
Storms strengthened even more after Lincoln, heading for Omaha and beyond. A couple of tornado reports were in the mix as well, toward Council Bluffs and Murray in Iowa. But widespread tree damage was the main story in the wake and aftermath of these storms.
As many will continue to pick up in the coming days, it’s comforting to know that the weather will be far quieter for the next several days.
As we’re waking up Thursday morning, temperatures are much cooler in falling to the 60s. Humidity has backed off some as well. Northwest winds will make conditions today a lot more seasonable with highs in the upper 80s and lower 90s.
The eventful day of severe weather on Wednesday will be put in the rearview mirror through the end of the work week and into this weekend. Humidity should remain in check, making for some more comfortable days in early August.
And by Saturday, the Huskers will have an open practice, the Big Red Preview, in Memorial Stadium for fans to enjoy. That’ll start around 6:30 p.m. with temperatures dropping throughout the event.
We will be in for a short-lived warm up into the middle and upper 90s for Sunday and Monday, yet much cooler by the end of next week as a more active pattern develops for rain chances.
