LPS says social media posts about threat to Goodrich are misinformation

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincoln Public Schools says students are spreading false social media posts about a threat to Goodrich Middle School.

In letters to parents on Monday and Tuesday, Principal Kelly Apel said the posts reference an old threat that police have already concluded is not credible.

The school said the posts contain misinformation about a hit list.

The posts also include a photo of a student, who Apel said has now become a victim of cyberbullying.

I want to be clear, the police have fully investigated and there was NO hit list, and the student pictured in these posts is NOT a threat,” Apel wrote.

LPS said students should report threats they see online but not repost them.

“We urge everyone to stop the dangerous trend of mass sharing threatening social media posts or conversations,” the district said in a letter. “The mass sharing of this type of information makes it harder to track where it originated from, and spreading false information and rumors only slows down the investigation process.”

Apel said police investigated another potential threat at Goodrich on Monday.

Investigators interviewed a Goodrich student who made “inappropriate comments regarding violence at school,” the principal said, and determined that there was no active threat.

Apel said the student will be disciplined.
