FREMONT, Neb. (KMTV) – A Fremont man has been charged with first degree murder after police said he stabbed a 4-month-old child.

Fremont Police said they responded to a report of an unconscious child in the 1300 block of Missouri Avenue at 9:30 p.m. Friday.

Responding officers said 19-year-old Alexander Hernandez had a knife and a witness saw him stabbing the child.

“Once they arrived, they went into the house and learned from other people in the residence that they actually observed this 19 year old male with this knife, stabbing this 4-month old infant,” said Lt. Ed Watts with Fremont Police. “And one of the residents were able to wrestle the 19-year-old, they were able to get the knife away. And at about that point is when our officers arrived and put him into custody.”

The child was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Hernandez was also charged with use of a weapon to commit a felony and commit child abuse intentionally resulting in death.

Neighbors nearby describe the neighborhood as a quiet place, where children are often seen playing and things like this don’t happen. Tom Peterson who has three boys of his own says seeing this tragedy happen so close to home is shocking.

“It’s eye-opening that you got that kind of violence and just crazy stuff going on,” Peterson said. “You never know what’s going on in other people’s lives. You hope that you never have to hear about those things. You just want your kids to be safe. So yeah, it’s shocking.”
