Athlete of the Week: Seward volleyball senior leads team to success

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Channel 8’s Athlete of the Week belongs to Seward senior Abby Covalt.

Covalt, a senior with the Bluejays, has been quarterbacking the defense all season long.

The Bluejays sit at 25-5 this year, and the senior has been a huge help to their defense.

“Every time I go to the gym, I just want to get 1% better,” Colvat said. “I just love playing with these girls, and I don’t want it to end.”

So far this season, Covalt has 300 digs, more than double that of the next teammate.

Her coach emphasized her impact on the team’s success.

“She does a great job at reading. She does an excellent job, she knows where the block is at,” Seward coach Tom Hallas said. “She’s there every time a ball is going down. I just think it’s never going to hit the floor.”

Hallas said the senior has received interest from several other colleges but she wants to keep those offers private.

“With this group of girls, it’s just so much fun. We just put each other in such good spots,” Covalt said.

Until she decides where she wants to take her game to the next level, she’ll keep doing what she does best.

Covalt and the Blue Jays will suit up for their first playoff match vs. Ashland-Greenwood on Thursday night.
