Lancaster County election official responds to ‘false and misleading’ social media post

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lancaster County election commissioner is calling a social media post from over the weekend “false and misleading.”

In a press release Monday, Election Commissioner Todd Wiltgen said a “malicious conspiracy theorist group” posted a video of a man returning his ballot.

The group “erroneously implied” the voter was doing something wrong, according to the election office.

Election officials reviewed surveillance video from the drop box and identified the voter.

The “young man” was returning his ballot for his first presidential election and took a selfie to “memorialize” the milestone,

“It is shameful and unAmerican to intimidate and threaten anyone for exercising their right to vote,” Wiltgen said in the release.

The election office contacted the Lincoln Police Department after seeing comments on the social media posts threatening harm to the voter.

“It is unfortunate this group is spreading false and misleading information to deceive the public and undermine confidence in our elections,” Wiltgen said. “They should remove the post and apologize immediately.”
