‘My glasses went flying’: Man recounts assault and robbery in downtown Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The victim of a violent robbery in the Haymarket is telling his story.

The man, who wants to remain anonymous for his safety, said he got a text on Sunday morning.

It said his vehicle was involved in a crash and needed to be towed.

But when he went to check on his vehicle near Eighth and R streets, he didn’t find any damage.

So he called the phone number that sent him the message.

The person on the other end claimed to be with Park & Go.

When the man walked back to his apartment building, another man dressed in all black tackled him from behind.

“My glasses went flying,” he said. “I hit my head on the ground, and I blurred out for a little bit, and I got bruises and bumps and scratches.”

The, he said, the apartment manager chased the attacker down the alley.

During the attack, the victim’s wallet fell to the ground.

That’s when the situation became even worse.

“Another lady pulled up in a black SUV and asked me if I needed assistance,” the man said. “I said, ‘Yes call 911.’ Instead of calling 911, she started taking money from where I was laying and then took off.”

He lost hundreds of dollars during the robbery.

None of the people involved have been caught.

“Eventually I’ll forgive them,” the victim said. “But yeah, they need to be prosecuted.”

He thinks he was targeted.

“It was pretty coincidental that they knew my number, where I parked, what kind of car I parked, where I lived, and especially what time I got off work,” he said. “Not too many people know that schedule.”

But he said the worst part of this attack isn’t the physical injuries, but the mental terror he has to recover from.

“You know, it’s more like a traumatic experience,” he said. “Like mentally, you’re always keeping your head on a swivel now.”
