Sources: Nebraska to hire Tennessee’s Mike Ekeler as special teams coordinator

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Nebraska football is set to hire a former Husker coach to lead its special teams unit.

On Monday, Inside Nebraska reported the Huskers are hiring Tennessee special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach Mike Ekeler.

Ekeler will take over for special teams coordinator Ed Foley, who parted ways with Nebraska last month.

Ekeler is from David City, Nebraska, and had a stint as the linebackers coach at Nebraska from 2008 to 2010.

Since then, he’s served in numerous assistant coaching roles at schools like Indiana, Georgia, Kansas and most recently Tennessee.

Ekeler will now seek to improve a Nebraska special teams unit that has struggled during head coach Matt Rhule’s first two seasons.

Notable offseason moves on the special teams side of the ball include transfer portal grabs in punter Jack McCallister from Washington, and long-snapper Kevin Gallic from New Hampshire.
