‘What is going on with Lincoln?’: Neighborhood shaken by string of vandalisms

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A woman is calling on her northeast Lincoln neighborhood on Tuesday to band together and stop criminals.

The Meadowlane neighborhood, near 70th and Holdrege streets, has been hit by vandals multiple times in the past month.

There have been broken windows, a broken mailbox and damage to a Ring doorbell camera, according to police data.

One woman who lives there caught some suspicious behavior on her camera.

She wanted to remain anonymous out of fear of retaliation, but she said it’s becoming increasingly concerning.

“In this neighborhood, it’s very scary especially because we’ve got kids over here,” she said. “And that’s my only thing is that, ‘What is going on with Lincoln, and what is going on with this neighborhood?'”

Back on March 10, her home was hit by a vandal around 4:30 a.m.

In the security footage, you can see a vehicle parked several houses down.

The culprit walked around her yard, looking at things on the ground and getting closer to her home.

The woman was awake as it happened, and her boyfriend went to the window.

When the person saw him, they picked up a rock and threw it at their house.

They took off running back to the vehicle, leaving a window broken.

The woman said because of her job, she leaves her house very early sometimes, so this could have been much worse.

“I’m always up throughout the night, I leave at two or three in the morning,” she said. “And who knows what would have happened if I was leaving for work. I could have been carjacked.”

It’s not an isolated incident. The woman shared footage that shows another vehicle has stopped by her house late at night, lingering by her driveway.

The one good thing, she said, is the sense of safety she feels from her neighbors.

She said the community has talked about getting involved in a neighborhood watch group to prevent this from happening again.

“That’s the first line of defense here at this point,” she said. “Like for example, if we’re not here, the neighbors are the first ones that could call that in, which would be nice. But I wish there was more we could do besides just looking at each other.”
