Aurora Public Schools releases statement regarding photo with Nazi flag taken in school’s locker room

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Officials with Aurora Public Schools, along with law enforcement, are investigating an incident in which two students were seen holding a Nazi flag in a picture on social media.
Late Thursday evening, Aurora High School was made aware of the photo that was taken in the locker room at Aurora High School, according to Jody Phillips, Superintendent of Aurora Public Schools.
Phillips said the photo was posted on Instagram and later spread to other social media outlets.
Once the school was made aware of the photo, law enforcement started an investigation involving those in the photo, those who took the photo and those who shared the photo on social media.
Although the social media page where this picture was posted contains the Aurora Huskies’ logo, the school said it is not owned or affiliated with Aurora Public Schools.
“The Aurora Public Schools acknowledges this photo is extremely inappropriate and unacceptable,” Phillips said in a Facebook post. “The photo depicts a symbol of hate and offensiveness that the Aurora Public Schools does not condone. It sheds a negative light on our school, school district, and community. This act, and the message it sends, is not tolerated in our school and we will take all means necessary to address this issue.”
According to Phillips, the students involved in this with this photo will face consequences according to the Aurora Public Schools code of conduct and state statute.
“On behalf of the staff, students, and school community, I greatly apologize for the actions of those involved and the negative message this act sends,” Phillips said. “Our school and school district will work to hold those responsible for this act accountable and continue to educate our students on acceptance, tolerance, hate, and digital citizenship.”
