50-year-old treasures unearthed from world’s largest time capsule in Seward

SEWARD, Neb. (KLKN) — The grounds of the world’s largest time capsule were peaceful Monday after its opening last week.

A 1975 Chevrolet Vega and Kawasaki motorcycle, both tucked inside the capsule in Seward 50 years ago, were in pristine condition.

“It was unbelievable to me that after 50 years, the colors were that bright and that the whole car was in that good of shape,” said Trish Davisson Johnson, daughter of the time capsule creator.

Other trinkets from the capsule were taken out by a brigade of eight to 10 people who showed up on the day of extraction.

All items were then placed at the original location of the House of Davisson furniture store, including treasured letters many are waiting to retrieve.

The letters themselves are in good condition, but not the envelopes.

“We couldn’t read any names, so things like that are going to be a mystery that we’ll have to solve overtime,” she said.

Items will be laid out on categorized tables inside the House of Davisson for the city’s Fourth of July celebration.

For those waiting for updates on their treasures, a form can be filled out on the time capsule’s Facebook page.

Johnson hopes to have all items returned to their rightful owners within six months.
