Dozens of donations fill a trailer for Lincoln nonprofit; helping young adults starting out

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Boxes, baskets, blankets and a whole lot of heart came from the community on Saturday.

“Our young people will tell you the support of items such as these donated goods, turns the box of the apartment into a home,” said Rose Hood Buss, the executive director of the Hub.

The Hub, a local nonprofit organization, serves young adults ages 17-25.

They provide free household items, education and empowerment for those who are just stepping into life on their own out of foster care.

Dozens of donations filled a trailer as the community helped provide the small things that someone might need.

Hood Buss said these items make a huge difference.

“All of this is critical for our young adults starting out in their first apartments,” she said. “If you think back to the first time you moved out, you probably had some items donated here and there. And for our young adults, they don’t have that same support system and so for us it’s really important that the community wraps around our young people.”

She said there is no instruction manual for being an adult, so the organization along with the volunteers feel it’s important to do these things for the younger generation.

“In a calendar year, we serve around 1200 unique individuals so that’s one time of service but for many of our young adults we’re working with them more than just once,” she said. “We’re working with them several times so there is a need in Lincoln.”

And Brian Johnson, one of those volunteers, said he felt compelled to lend a helping hand for such a worthy cause.

“To donate a few hours is a very small price to pay for the sacrifices these young adults have been through,” he said. “Three hours for this donation is very easy because these kids have nothing. And so I’m glad to donate something to help these young adults.”
