Extreme, dangerous heat for another day

We know what we’re up against today because it’s on par with Sunday’s heat.

The heat index, or the “feels like temperature” peaked close to 115° in many locations. For Omaha, that was the highest heat index recorded since July 28, 2023.

We have an Extreme Heat Warning in place again for eastern Nebraska from noon to 8 p.m. Monday night. The heat index will peak around 110-115° during the hottest portion of the afternoon.

A Heat Advisory is in place for parts of central and western Nebraska from noon to 8 p.m. CDT Monday. The heat index out that way will range from 100-105°.

It’ll be a scorcher in the extreme, dangerous heat as the sun rises higher in the sky. High temperatures across southeast Nebraska will be in the middle and upper 90s.

Peak heat indices across the area will be around 105-115° and incredibly uncomfortable again.

Some scattered storms in northern Nebraska this afternoon and evening could be strong to severe. There is up to a Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk for a higher chance at seeing those storms closer to and into South Dakota.

The risk for severe weather actually goes up to a Moderate (Level 4 of 5) risk from South Dakota into northern Iowa with a higher end risk for a damaging wind threat as storms come through that area tonight.

Relief is still a couple days away with a cold front sparking storm development late Tuesday into Wednesday.
