Nebraska’s move over law is about to get stricter

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Nebraska’s move over law will be expanded next week.

Before, drivers were required to slow down and move over only for emergency vehicles and roadside assistance vehicles.

But now, they must do the same for all vehicles, as well as bicyclists and pedestrians.

The new law will go into effect Wednesday as many drivers are returning from Labor Day trips.

Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner said this law saves lives.

“You hear of officers nationwide that are killed every year in traffic stops or in those kinds of situations,” he said. “So it’s really important for people to pay attention when they see any vehicle now.”

Drivers who disregard this new law will have to pay the price in the form of a traffic infraction ticket.

But after continued violations, it can turn into a misdemeanor.

In situations where there’s only one lane of traffic in each direction, you are supposed to slow down until you’ve passed the vehicle or pedestrian.
