Athlete of the Week: Lincoln Southeast’s Mason Mehta scores two second-half touchdowns

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Mason Mehta willed his team to a big win Friday night with his performance on both sides of the ball.

Lincoln Southeast defeated Lincoln Southwest 26-9.

It was a scoreless game at the half, but the second half is when the Knights surged, and it was in large part thanks to Mehta.

He scored on two deep balls thrown by his quarterback, Gavin Semm, helping the Knights score 26 points in the final two quarters.

“The first and second quarter, we had a rough patch; but in the third and fourth we came out balling,” Mehta said. “We did some good stuff. Our receivers did what we had to do.”

The junior finished the night with 174 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

“He had a fantastic game on both sides of the football,” Lincoln Southeast head coach Ryan Gottula said. “He did a great job defensively, getting after the passer and making some big plays there. Really proud of Mason.”

Through two games, Mehta has three total touchdowns and 263 receiving yards.

He also plays defensive end, where he excels as well. So far in 2025, he has 18 total tackles, three tackles for loss and three sacks.

After a 2-0 start, Mehta sees big things this year for the Knights.

“We have big expectations,” he said. “We have Creighton Prep coming up. We’re going to do what we have to do.”

Lincoln Southeast will host the Creighton Prep Junior Jays next Friday at Seacrest Field.
