UPDATE: Organizers, police preparing for Lincoln Marathon

UPDATE:

The 2019 Lincoln Marathon and Half Marathon are happening this Sunday.

More than 14,000 runners from all over the country are signed up for it.

The full marathon is a 26.2 mile course around Lincoln.

But how much work does it take to set up an event like this?

Organizers said they have around 2,500 volunteers involved to help host it.

“From aid station workers, to medical people, to doctors out on the course, to the radio club, to our course volunteers who are directing you for where to go and at the finish line putting on medals,” co-director Nancy Sutton said.  “So we just have a lot of people in a lot of different areas.”

Sutton said Friday, volunteers were already setting up mile markers for the run and on Saturday, they’ll be setting up at the start and finish lines.

She said it also takes around eight months of planning to get ready for this.

They’ll get a lot of help from Lincoln police, who will be directing traffic this Sunday, to make sure pedestrians and runners are safe.

“This is a really big event that showcases how awesome our city is,” Ofc. Angela Sands said.  “These runners come from all over the world.  They’re going to run our trails, our bike paths, they’re going to go past the zoo.  All kinds of places in Lincoln to showcase what a cool city this is.”

Sands said they’re calling in extra officers to do that so they can still have enough to patrol throughout the city.

They won’t be alone.  Sands said UNL police and the Nebraska State Patrol are helping out and Lincoln Fire and Rescue will also be on hand for any medical emergencies.

It’s not too late to register for the marathon.  You can still do that at the Cornhusker Marriott on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
