City of Lincoln plans repairs for three big potholes after drivers report concern

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — On social media, a hot topic is potholes.

Channel 8 went out to the streets to see what drivers are encountering, especially in three problem areas that drivers continue to report.

A pothole near 70th and Pioneers Boulevard, 27th Street between Jameson and Tierra, and another on 70th north of O Street.

“Right now, today, they are doing the same exact thing, they are filling potholes,” Erika Hill, the communications and engagement manager of Lincoln Transportation and Utilities, said. “We do have the three that you mentioned; those are already in our queue to be repaired, and you can plan those three specifically to be repaired in the next 3 to 5 days.”

LTU said crews are patching potholes daily with machines, but it’s more about how potholes form.

“There is a tiny crack that will open up into a street, and then you will have some moisture that gets into that. So eventually, over repetition of freeze-thaw cycles, you will end up getting a small pothole,” Hill said.

Short-term fixes include cold patching, while long-term solutions could mean larger resurfacing projects.

Some people did not want to be on camera, but they said they have no complaints as long as the roads get fixed.

“The main thing that we are focused on is being proactive; we are already out there, making sure that we are getting to those potholes before they become a very big problem.”
