LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A 7-year-old boy was killed, and his brother was injured following a UTV crash in Bennet on Monday.

In a letter to families on Monday, the Bennet-Palmyra School District identified the boy as Charles Kohl, a second-grade student at Bennet Elementary.

Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said the 9-year-old brother suffered a broken leg. According to the sheriff’s office, he was the one driving the UTV.

Houchin said Kohl was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash.

“The loss of a child is a pain no family should ever have to go through,” Houchin said during a press conference. “We are so sorry for their loss.”

Just after 4 p.m., several first responders from Lincoln, Bennet and Hickman were sent to a home near Tyler and Cottonwood streets in northeast Bennet.

According to Houchin, the initial investigation indicates the UTV made a sharp turn and rolled.

A neighbor who was riding an ATV alongside the two boys witnessed the crash and drove to his mom, who called 911.

Houchin said the three boys were gathering tools and materials to build a treehouse.

According to the sheriff’s office, there is no driving age limit on private property.

District OR-1 schools are closed on Tuesday to allow time for the school community to grieve, support one another, and access needed resources.

“Our hearts are with the student’s family, friends, classmates and staff during this incredibly difficult time,” the letter said. “The well-being of our students, families and staff is our utmost priority as we navigate this tragic loss together.”

The Bennet Community Church will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. for the community to gather for prayer and support. A meal train has also been organized to help support the Kohl family.
