Nebraska DMV addresses driver’s license renewal delays

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Drivers across the Capital City are reporting frustrating delays in receiving renewed driver’s licenses, prompting concerns about expired temporary permits and difficulty contacting the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles.

After hearing from multiple viewers, Channel 8 reached out directly to Nebraska DMV officials to learn what’s behind the slowdown.

Many drivers say they expected their new cards to arrive within the usual three-week timeframe after renewing in person.

Instead, some have waited well beyond that window, with temporary 30-day paper licenses nearing expiration before permanent cards arrived in the mail.

Several drivers also reported trouble reaching the DMV for answers, saying phone calls often resulted in busy signals or lengthy hold times.

Channel 8’s Meg West tested the phone system herself and experienced similar issues, receiving busy signals on multiple attempts before finally reaching a hold line that lasted several minutes.

A director with the Nebraska DMV says the delays are tied to technical problems connected to the rollout of updated REAL ID requirements.

According to the department, computer glitches caused errors on some licenses during processing.

At the same time, the DMV has been transitioning to a new vendor to produce license cards.

Officials say the combination of system changes and vendor transition has required additional quality-control checks to ensure licenses are printed correctly before they are mailed.

Despite the delays, the DMV says drivers who have already renewed their licenses remain legally valid in the state system, even if their temporary paper permits expire.

Officials also say temporary licenses are being automatically extended to affected drivers, meaning residents do not need to return to the DMV or file additional paperwork while they wait for their permanent cards.

The department expects the backlog to be cleared by the end of next week and says delivery times should then return to the normal two- to three-week turnaround.

For now, DMV officials encourage residents awaiting licenses to be patient as the agency works through the delays and completes the transition process.
