LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – On July 2, the Respect Nebraska Voters campaign turned in more than 186,000 signatures. The petition involves a proposed constitutional amendment to appear on the November ballot.

According to Respect Nebraska Voters, the campaign aims to protect Nebraskans rights as voters and ensure that their decisions be respected by politicians.

The proposed changes consist of changing the number of lawmakers required to override anything voters have passed from two-thirds of the state legislature to four-fifths.

“From Douglas County to Kimball County, and everywhere in between, our neighbors know that this matters. Nebraskans are tired of politicians ignoring the will of the people,” said Jodi Lepaopao, Respect Nebraska Voters’ campaign manager.

After the Secretary of State’s Office reviews and accepts the petition and signatures, the proposed amends will be on the November ballot.

The Respect Nebraska Voters campaign said politicians have recently ignored the will of the people.

“Whether we’re talking about payday lending, minimum wage, or paid sick leave, voters only turned to the initiative process because lawmakers were not responsive or willing to acknowledge what their constituents clearly wanted,” said Al Davis, Respect Nebraska Voters ballot sponsor and former state senator. “These only became ballot issues because the legislature failed the people. That’s what this is about: listening to the people. Whether it is health care access, wages, schools, or workplace protections, our votes count, and our state legislators should respect our choices.”
