Two people arrested in connection to Grand Island assault
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KLKN) – Matthew Bishop, a 41-year-old man, was assaulted on Sunday, July 5. Two people have been arrested in connection with the assault.
Two 23-year-olds, Jesus A. Reyes and Angel G. Vega, have been arrested for first degree assault.
Officers were dispatched around 11 p.m. when Bishop was found lying in the road unconscious after an assault. He was then transported to CHI St. Francis Emergency Room where he was later taken to CHI Bergan Mercy Medical Center in Omaha due to the severity of his injuries.
According to his family, Bishop went on a smoke break from his weekly D&D meeting and never returned. He is currently still on a ventilator with severe disabling injuries.
Bishop’s sister, Sheila Ehresman, said he is on life support while they find matches as Bishop is an organ donor.
Grand Island Police Department (GIPD) Division Chief Dean Elliot said the investigation would turn into a murder investigation if Bishop passes. GIPD said the investigation is ongoing and urges community members to come forward if they have any information regarding the assault.
Friends and family of Bishop have taken to social media sharing about his great work ethic, humor and kindness. His sister asks for prayers of peace in his “final journey home”.
