LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — There are confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, in Nebraska during the multi-state outbreak. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating the source with rumors saying it could be Taco Bell.
It is most commonly known for causing extreme diarrhia.
CHI Health held a zoom conference yesterday to address the cases here in Nebraska but also inform the public about common misconceptions.
“Unfortunately, on social media, there are some ideas about how this is a great way to lose weight,” said Renuga Vivekanandan, MD. “I would really caution that. This is an infection and we have to be very careful and take infection seriously.”
The infection could last a couple days to a couple weeks.
The CDC officials said the infection can be found in produce along with swimming pools. Early investigations show lettuce or salad greens could be a potential source.
As the investigation continues, it is being widely reported that Taco Bell could be connected to the current outbreak.
Taco Bell says the rumors are just that but want to help in the possible prevention of the disease.
“The health and safety of our guests is our top priority. Public health officials have not confirmed a link to Taco Bell or any specific ingredient, supplier, restaurant or retailer,” said Taco Bell Corp. “While authorities continue their broader review, Taco Bell has voluntarily and temporarily removed limited ingredients at select restaurants as a precautionary measure. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and follow the guidance of public health authorities.”
When asked earlier, the CDC said no specific type of producer, grower or supplier has been identified as the main source.
