Data centers executive order signed by Gov. Pillen today

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Today, Gov. Jim Pillen signed an executive order regarding data centers. This order will end taxpayer subsidies by suspending tax incentives.

Additionally, the order demands the creation of a task force. The task force will identify safeguards for the state’s natural resources from data center use.

Pillen said Nebraska is appealing for data centers because of its resources.

“Nebraska is appealing because of its available land, low electrical rates and abundant water, but we’ve also provided them with tax incentives to locate here, which means they are making a lot of money at same time,” said Pillen. “We need to take a look at our process to make sure we’re taking all steps necessary to protect our state’s resources as well as our taxpayers.”

This executive order follows legislation which prevents large data centers from depending on power built and funded by Nebraska ratepayers.

Lynne Walz, a former state senator and Democratic candidate for governor, said Pillen helped pass the incentives he is halting.

“Today Governor Pillen is signing an executive order rolling back incentives for data centers. Nebraskans deserve to know the truth,” said Walz. “Less than four months ago, he was lobbying senators to pass these same incentives. We are tired of politicians saying one thing and doing another.”
