NE Supreme Court rejects Hilgers accusations of invalid signatures regarding medical marijuana petitions

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has decided to uphold a lower courts decision regarding two medical marijuana laws.

The decision, agreeing with a Lancaster County Court judge, maintains the validity of two petitions to legalize and regulate medical cannabis in Nebraska.

In 2024, Attorney General Mike Hilgers had filed a lawsuit to evaluate the petitions approval, stating the petitions contained invalid signatures.

The district court rejected that last December, stating the petitions had enough signatures to move forward and the Nebraska Supreme Court agreed today.

Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana Executive Director Crista Eggers said elected officials wanted to override the voice of the people.

“This was never about protecting Nebraska law,” Eggers said. “It was about whether a handful of elected officials could use the courts to override the will of the people. Today, our state’s highest court stated the obvious: they cannot.”
