Columbus sets updated regulations for e-bikes and scooters

COLUMBUS, Neb. (KLKN) — Columbus City Council has created new regulations for electric bikes and scooters.

On Tuesday, Sept. 8, the Council approved a new ordinance that updated regulations for the electric mobility devices.

According to the City of Columbus, the ordinance was under deliberation before the recent death of Payton Ackerson, a Polk county teenager.

For an e-bike, riders must not ride in the Downtown Business District but are encouraged to walk beside the bike. For motorized scooters, drivers are also advised to walk beside the device.

For both electric devices on roadways up to 25 mph, everyone is allowed. For roadways 25 mph to 35 mph, riders must have an operator’s license and be 18 years of age or older.
