Man arrested after making physical threats to preschool staff in Kearney

KEARNEY, Neb. (KLKN) — The Kearney Police Department (KPD) responded to the area around Bright Futures Preschool on Sept. 28 after reports of a male making threats against staff.

The unknown male was reportedly making threats of physical violence against a Kearney Public School’s staff member.

Around 8:15 a.m., when employees were waiting for school busses to arrive, KPD arrived and began looking for the suspect. He had reportedly left the scene on a bicycle.

Officers quickly located the suspect. According to KPD, the male became verbally confrontational and physically aggressive when he was told he was under arrest. Officers were able to gain control of the male and take him into custody.

Michael Scott, 29, was arrested and lodged for terroristic threats, possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

“Threats involving the safety of our schools, students and staff are taken seriously by our officers. They understand that when a threat is reported near a school, there is no time waste in responding,” Chief Gabe Kowalek said. “We appreciate our strong partnership with all of our area schools & I am thankful that our officers only sustained minor injuries during this incident. I am proud of these officers and KPDs continual effort in assuring that this community remains a safe city to visit and reside.”
