Taser, pepper spray deployed as man allegedly assaults Lincoln Police officer

A man was arrested on numerous charges after allegedly resisting arrest and assaulting a Lincoln Police officer.

A police spokeswoman said that officers saw a man, later identified as Brian Wit, 51, unconscious in an SUV in a parking lot 18th and N Street around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Officers knocked on the window, attempting to wake Wit, who had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and smelled of alcohol, Officer Angela Sands said.

Officers repeatedly told Wit to turn the car off and get out, Sands said, but Wit refused.

An officer grabbed Wit’s arm to try and pull him out when Wit allegedly began assaulting the officer, striking them in the face and neck and choking them, Sands said.

Sands said another officer used pepper spray on Wit, but it had no effect.

Meanwhile, the other officer got free from Wit’s grasp and the officers deployed a Taser, which again had no effect on Wit, Sands said.

Wit was eventually handcuffed and taken to the hospital, which is required by policy anytime someone is tasered, Sands said.

Wit, who has three prior DUI convictions, was released and taken to jail.

He was arrested for DUI 4th offense with refusal of a chemical test, resisting arrest, obstructing a peace officer, assaulting a police officer, and possession of 16 grams of marijuana.
