Bird Box? Live pigeon found in suspicious box that prompted 2-hour investigation in downtown Lincoln

Officials now know the contents of a suspicious box that prompted an hours-long investigation and the closing of a busy downtown street in Lincoln Wednesday.

It was a live pigeon.

Traffic was blocked off as crews investigated the suspicious box at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center, near 16th and L Street Wednesday afternoon.

Officials said a caller reported a man had left the box at the Temple and run away.

Police officers were posted on street corners, and the area was taped off for more than two hours.

At one point, crews deployed robots investigate further.

A Lincoln Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said the robots used x-ray technology to determine what was in the box.

Animal control was called in to remove the bird, which had minor injuries that officials believe were there before it was found in the box.

The pigeon was placed in the care of a Wildlife Rescue Team volunteer.

Animal Control Manager Steve Beal told Channel 8 Eyewitness News the pigeon is in good health.

The Wildlife Rescue Team is a Lincoln non-profit run by volunteers.
