Historic Veterans’ Home move underway

Grand Island & Kearney, Neb.
Residents of the Grand Island Veterans’ Home began loading into vehicles shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, starting a move that would leave the facility empty for the first time in more than 130 years.
After 130 years, today’s the last day for the Grand Island Veterans Home
Governor Pete Ricketts waited at the brand new Central Nebraska Veterans’ Home in Kearney to greet veterans.
The move follows years of planning.
Kearney was picked in 2013 through a bidding process to be the new home for the facility. Ground was broken in 2016.
The last vehicle is expected to roll out of G.I. at about 11:00 a.m. with the remaining staff members.
