UPDATE: Suspect in custody after pursuit, standoff along I-80

(KHGI) A traffic call quickly turned into a police chase and a standoff on Friday morning, ending with one man in custody.

Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol said other drivers on Interstate 80 near Kearney called in to report a driver of a black pickup who was driving recklessly at around 9:30 a.m.

NSP said a trooper found the pickup traveling on the shoulder in the eastbound lanes and initiated a traffic stop.

When approaching the driver, the trooper spotted a weapon and returned to his NSP vehicle. NSP said the suspect then drove off eastbound, setting off a police chase.

Troopers called for a helicopter and assistance from the Hall County Sheriff’s Office as the pursuit headed east at speeds between 75 and 80 mph, saying they deployed stop sticks ahead of the pickup. Two of the suspect’s tires were blown out and the chase ended at mile marker 300 at the Wood River interchange on I-80.

More than a dozen law enforcement officers from both agencies gathered at the scene as they closed the north and south ramps at the Wood River interchange to traffic.

NSP said they then began negotiating with the driver to surrender, and they said they took him into custody without incident at around 11:30 a.m.

A spokesperson for NSP said there was no immediate threat to the public as the officers negotiated with the driver.

The suspect’s name has not been released, and details about possible charges were not immediately available.
