Lincoln student on Time magazine cover

Time magazine printed an issue on guns in America and what they mean to some people.
Jolene Dawson, a junior at Lincoln Southwest High School, was given the opportunity to be on the cover alongside 244 other people.
Dawson was taking a coaches training course at Norris High School when trap shooting coach Jim Dickerson noticed how good she was, and asked her if she wanted to go to St. Louis, MI. to be a part of the magazine.
Dawson understands there’s a lot of opinions on guns and gun control in America right now, but it’s something people need to educate themselves on. She feels too many people base their opinions on what they read on social media.
Jolene Dawson said, “I think it mostly has to do with people not understanding the respect for fire arms. When we come around to the safety aspects… that’s the number one thing that’s grilled into us being athletes and being part of shooting sports. When you join a team or go out to a meet for ATA or anything like that, it’s always about the safety aspect. Safety is the number one thing, and it’s people that don’t understand the safety that we have to worry about.”
She was proud to give her opinion in a national magazine.
