Abbott Sports Complex damaged by weekend storms

Abbott Sports Complex suffered damage from severe storms that swept through the capital city over the weekend.

Lincoln Sports Foundation President Dan Lesoing said the storm knocked shingles off the soccer building and tore the roof off the indoor facility, forcing them to cancel events on Sunday.

"It’s traumatic," Lesoing said.  "There’s a lot of people who need to use the facility in the next few weeks.  So trying to keep it open through temporary repairs."

High winds also uprooted a nearby tree and pushed some fences over and ripped the bubble dome in half.

"It’s beyond repair," Lesoing said.  "It was tore completely in the middle."

Lesoing said they don’t have a damage estimate yet, but they are talking with the insurance company and are on the way to making repairs.

He said even without the dome, they still have some upcoming events to host.

"Right now, it’s not being utilized much because it’s summertime," he said.  "So all the programming, the tennis players and the baseball training, that’s all being outside.  So now, it’s pretty empty."

But he said they hope to replace it by September.
