LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN)– A local Black-owned business just got a boost from Discover, a $25,000 boost!

“The first thought in my mind was I was like, man I never win any type of sweepstakes or contest you know,” Derick Gaspard, owner, and chef.

Jujus Vegan Cajun and Creole Cuisine near S 11th and B streets received the check after a customer recommended the restaurant be put in Discover’s Eat It Forward random drawing. The goal of the award is to support Black businesses during the pandemic, giving $5 million in total to businesses in the US.
Gaspard says the award will help add a full-time worker to his growing vegan business and add a mobile option like a food truck so he can provide healthier food options to the poorer parts of Lincoln.
“I was just really humbled by it all because this contest is something that you can’t campaign for yourself or it has to be a nomination from the community and that’s what made it mean more to me,” said Gaspard.
Jujus is a preorder restaurant and Gaspard hopes the boost inspires others to reach their goals.
