A local psychiatrist breaks down why so many people are panic buying right now.

UNMC’s M.D. Lauren Edwards says shopping is a way people feel like they have a bit of control, A way of managing the situation.

Coronavirus concerns have led to stores running out of toilet paper and other products. But Edward says to follow official advice on what to buy rather than follow the crowds.

“People are panic shopping because they don’t know exactly what else they can do to prepare for this crisis right now,” says Edwards. “It’s somewhat difficult. You want to make sure that your family is prepared but this is a good time to lean on the advice of the CDC.”

Edward adds that it is good to ensure you have enough of your proper medications, and a certain amount of food on hand but not to buy too much as it leads to a shortage of goods for everyone else.
