Abortion ban added as amendment to Nebraska gender-affirming health care bill

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A Nebraska senator is hoping to add an abortion ban to the gender-affirming health care bill.
On Monday, Sen. Ben Hansen of Blair filed an amendment to Legislative Bill 574, the Let Them Grow Act.
If the amendment passes, LB 574 – which would ban gender-affirming health care for minors – would also include a 12-week abortion ban.
This comes after the Nebraska Heartbeat Act, which would have banned abortions at around six weeks, was killed in April.
Sen. Merv Riepe of Ralston contended that six weeks was not enough time to decide whether to get an abortion.
Riepe was in favor of a 12-week ban and filed an amendment to the Nebraska Heartbeat Act.
But since Riepe didn’t vote to invoke cloture, senators never voted on the amendment.
The Let Them Grow Act has not yet been scheduled for a final round of debate.
