After deadly holiday weekend on lakes, officials stress safety
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – After a deadly holiday weekend for Nebraska on the lakes, officials are stressing water safety as the summer months continue.
“They had the one thing in common they were all on like inflatable’s, or pool toys. They went out into water with people that couldn’t swim, and that ended up to be, you know, tragic,” Jeff Clauson, with Nebraska Game and Parks, said.
He said there’s been an uptick in people getting out and exploring lakes this summer, emphasizing the importance of being smart.
Boaters need to be extra cautious with more people on the lake but also, keeping an eye on your friends and making sure they are staying safe, plays a big role in limiting those fatalities.
“Ask if they’re decent enough swimmer,” Clauson said.
He also stresses not to drink while boating. The sun, the waves and fatigue can have a major impact on your driving. No matter what you’re doing on the lake, if you are not a good swimmer, wear your life jacket.
