Dinner and fundraiser thanks Lancaster County firefighters

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — An appreciation dinner and fundraiser was held on Thursday to thank all of the volunteers who battled Lancaster County’s historic wildfires last month.

Everyone was invited to join and contribute to the community meal at Hallam Auditorium.

The firefighters enjoyed burgers, hot dogs, side dishes and cake in their honor.

First State Bank hosted the event and promised to match up to $25,000 in donations.  Collection buckets were placed throughout the auditorium.

Tim Kalkowski, a loan officer at the bank, said the money will be split equally among the 24 departments that responded to the fires.

Hallam Fire Chief Ryan Skillett said the money could help his department replace and repair equipment.

“There’s a lot of departments that night that lost some equipment,” he said. “Some trucks got broke down; some pumps got broke down.”

At least six structures, including some homes, were destroyed after investigators say a shredder accidentally sparked the first blaze.

Three firefighters were also injured: two from Crete and one from the Southwest Rural Fire Department here in Lincoln.

If you still want to donate to help the firefighters, you can bring a contribution to First State Bank sometime in the next week.
