Athlete of the week: Ty Phillips

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) —Ty Phillips, a Lincoln Southwest grad is having what he calls a successful summer.

“I’ve probably had my most successful summer. Our team has played extremely well for the situations we had,” said Phillips

Phillips is one of the players on Lincoln southwest’s legion team Pinnacle Bank. He got a chance to compete in a travel tournament in Oklahoma last week. On Wednesday, he was awarded player of the game.

Phillips went 2-5, with 7 RBI’s, including a grand slam.

“I’ve always had a super basic approach. Just trying to find a fastball early in the count,” Phillips said.

Phillips is committed to Fort Scott Community college in southeast Kansas and says he’s been playing more free this summer. Which, has put him in a great spot before he heads to the college level he says.

“This summer I’ve really tried stuff. I’ve been changing some approach stuff, and I’ve been trying to learn about myself,” Phillips said.

“My best baseball I play is when I know I’m going to be okay.”

He’s excited for what lies ahead.
