Athlete of the Week: Waverly’s Gavin McMillan

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) —Waverly faced off against Norris in Week 7 of high school football, continuing its decade-plus long winning streak with a 48-12 win over the Titans on Friday night.

The Vikings, who are coming off of a 13-0 2025 and state title have had a tough schedule to start 2026. Friday’s win enhanced their record to 5-2 and made them take second place in B District 2.

Senior wide receiver Gavin McMillan recorded four touchdowns in the contest, marking the greatest number of times he has found the endzone in a single season with 16.

“We did great,” McMillan said. “We executed on everything—special teams (and) offense. Our (offensive)-line was phenomenal tonight—really good bounce back from last week.”

But what made the performance even more impressive was the fact that McMillan had the flu, playing through the illness, and scoring 24 of the Vikings’ 48 points.

“I threw up 13 times before the game in the locker room, and I couldn’t really do much,” McMillan said. “I was just sick. But the adrenaline started kicking in and (I) started making plays. It was a fun night.”

McMillan and the Vikings are set to continue their road trip in Week 8, paying a visit to a 2-6 Pius X team.
