Authorities have arrested the fiance of a woman found dead in a small Nebraska town.

The Saunders County Sheriff’s Office lodged 25-year-old Kolton Barnes for first degree murder in connection to the death of 27-year-old Kayla Matulka.

Deputies and other law enforcement personnel, including investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol, responded Wednesday to Matulka’s home in Malmo. Malmo is about 45 minutes north of Lincoln.

“We got a call from a citizen that they believe there was a party in the house… that is deceased,” Sheriff Kevin Stukenholtz said. “So we came over and immediately it was evident foul play was involved.”

Authorities say Matulka suffered several stab wounds.

Matulka’s two children were unharmed, Stukenholtz said.

“Small towns enjoy small town life however this town was subject to a bank robbery years ago, and we have something that appears to be a homicide,” he said.

Barnes was also arrested for felony animal a cruelty. Authorities say a dead dog was found at the home.

Investigators do not believe there is a threat to the public at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
