Baxter’s walk-off single sends Lincoln Southeast to state

Lincoln Southeast's Owen Baxter hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to help the Knights defeat North Star in the A-6 district final.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – With two outs and the bases loaded, Lincoln Southeast sophomore Owen Baxter hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to help the Knights defeat North Star, 3-2, in the A-6 district final.

“I just wanted to make up for what I did my last at bat,” Baxter said. “I just wanted to not let my team down. I just wanted to do my job.”

Baxter was frustrated that he didn’t get a bunt down in the bottom of the seventh that would have helped the Knights win the game.

Head coach Montana Jones says he was impressed with Baxter’s poise in flushing out his previous at-bat and bringing home the game-winning run.

“He’s one of those kids, he’s a football player and he grinds it, moves on to the next at bat,” Jones said. “He’s just a really good competitor and finds a way to win.”

Baxter’s heroics sent the Knights to the Class A state baseball tournament for the first time since 2018. He says he is going to take his same approach that he had at the plate on Saturday to the state tournament.

“Don’t make the game bigger than it needs to be,” Baxter said. “Just play it like every other game.”

The state baseball tournament begins on Friday, May 13.
