Calls in the 402 to require all ten digits

Some changes are coming to those who live in the eastern end of the state and use the 402 area code.
Starting February 26, Nebraskans living in the 402 area will be required to dial all 10 digits when making any phone calls. The new requirement is designed to help prepare for the new 531 area code, which will be put to use once all the 402 numbers are assigned.
Right now, dialing the area code is only required when making long distance calls. Steve Meradith with Windstream says the change couldn't be avoided. He says rates won't change, meaning a local call will still be a local call.
Meradith says when they do run out of numbers in the 402 area code, Windstream will begin issuing new 531 numbers. Officials are not sure when that will happen, but the new requirement starts Febuary 26, just in case.
